RED ALGAE(RHODOPHYTA)
RED ALGAE(RHODOPHYTA)
Rhodophyta:
The scientific name of Red Algae is Rhodophyta and they belong to class Rhodopyhceae. They are two classes of red algal namely the Florideophceae and Bangiophy Bangiophyceae. Both Florideophyceae and Bangiophyceae comprise 99% of red algal diversity in marine and freshwater habitats.
Red algae or Rhodophyta - It is a distinctave type of species that are mostly found in freshwater lake and are the oldest type of the eukaryotic algae. They are red in colour due to presence of a pigment called chlorophyll A, pycocyanin, and phycoerthrin. They are the member of the tribe Amansieae (Rhodomelaceae,Ceramiales,Rhodophyta),in which only Aneurianna and and Lenormandia Sonder have foliar blades. They are the distinctive type of species, mostly found in the deep freshwater bodies.
Examples of Red algae:
Ø Irish moss
Ø Dulse
Ø Laver(nori)
Ø Coralline algae
General Characteristics of Red algae:
Red algae are different from other Except For diatoms.Listed below are general characteristics of Red Algae.
Ø Lack of flagella and centrioles.
Ø Presence of photosynthetic pigements.
Ø Found both in marine and freshwater.
Ø They show biphasic or triphasic life cycle patterns.
Ø They are a multicellular,filament,blade structure.
Ø Stored food is in the form f starch and polymers of galactan sulphate.
Ø A pit connection (hole in the septum) is formed between two algal cell.
Ø Have a diffuse growth pattern-Apical growth ,complex oogamy (triphastic).
Ø These group of red algae is generally found in tropical marine location.
Ø The mood of nutrition may either be sarprophytic, parasitic or also epiphytic.
Ø There cell wall consist of cellulose and many different types of carbohydrates.
Ø Grow on solid surface independently or some times found attached to other algae.
Ø Presences of pit in the cell walls, through which cytoplasmic connection are maintained.
Ø The male sex organs are known as spermatangium and the female sex organ are called carpogania or procrap.
Ø Mode of Reproduction : It takes place by all there means vegetative, asexual and sexual mode of reproduction is by monospores and during the sexual mode of reproduction, they undergo altemation of generations.
Different of Red algae to other algae:
The only difference between the red algae and other algae is that the Red algae lack of flagella, the whip-like structure that help in locomotion and perform sensory functions.
Different pigments present in algae:
The different pigments present in red algae are:
Ø Red phycoerythrin
Ø Blue phycoerythrin
Ø Zeaxanthin
Ø Caroteans
Ø Lutein
Uses of Red Algae:
Red algae has great ecological importance. They form a vital part of the food chai and are also involved in producing about 40 to 60 per cent of the tota global oxygen for both terrestrial habitat and other aquatic habitats.Listed below are a few ecological and commercial important of red algae.
Ø Algae provide natural food for fish and other aquatic animals.
Ø Red algae is the most important commercial food in japan and region of north Atlantic.
Ø Agar or agar-agar a,jelly-like substance which is used in puddings, dairy toppings and other instant food products is extracted from Red algae.
Ø Red algae are used are as the source of food for thousand years as they are high vitamins, minerals, a rich source of calcium ,magnesium, and antioxidants.
Ø They are source of the dietary fibre as they have ability to promote healthy circulation, lower bad cholesterol and regulate blood sugar levels.
Ø They are also involved in nourishing your skin, boosting the immune system and contributing to bone of health.
Importance of Red algae:
Red algae form an important part of ecosystem and are consumed by various organisms such as crustaceans, fish, worms and even humans.Red algae are also that is used as a food additive.they are rich calcium and also used in vitamin supplements.
Red algae found:
Red algae are found in coral reefs and tide pools. They have the ability to survive at grater depth then other algae because the pigment phycoerthrin absorbs the blue light that can penetrate deeper than any other light wave. This allows to carry out photosynthesis at greater depth.
